The Drive-In Theatre

Drive-In DeKalb County

Written By Emma Goggans

When it comes to old-school charm and a truly unique night out, DeKalb County has one of its most special attractions shining under the stars: the Ridgeview Drive-In, located on Sand Mountain in Henagar, Alabama.

With only around 330 drive-in theaters left in the entire country, Ridgeview isn’t just a fun night out—it’s a treasure. Reopened and lovingly revitalized in 2023, the theater brings new energy to a beloved tradition, blending modern comforts with vintage charm. It’s the kind of place where families, couples, and friend groups can pile into the car, roll the windows down, and enjoy a movie the way generations before us once did.

And let’s be honest, there is just something special about watching a film outdoors. The soft hum of a car radio,  the cool evening breeze sweeping over the hills, and the flicker of film against the night sky.

What to Expect

  • Double features every movie night
  • Affordable pricing (bring the whole crew!)
  • A family-friendly atmosphere
  • Scenic views that make the perfect backdrop
  • That warm, nostalgic glow that keeps you coming back

Whether you’re watching the latest blockbuster or discovering a film you’ve never seen before, the setting makes every movie feel a little more magical.

What Makes Ridgeview Special

  1. A Scenic Setting
The drive-in is nestled in the rolling hills of northeast Alabama, surrounded by trees and distant mountain views. As the sun sets, the backdrop feels like something out of a movie itself — the perfect prelude to film magic.
  2. Double Features & Fresh Flicks
Ridgeview shows two movies a night, giving you more bang for your buck and/or more time staring at the sky. The lineup includes new releases, so it’s not just vintage vibes — it’s current cinema, nostalgia, and community all rolled into one.
  3. Concession Stand & Full Kitchen
The concession stand isn’t just popcorn. Ridgeview features a full kitchen, so you can grab real meals — burgers, chicken fingers, patty melts, and more — or call in a to-go order. Plus, there’s a classic candy bar and drink options to round out the experience. Click here to check out the menu!
  4. Great Value
    • One person: $5
    • Two people: $10
    • Car load (up to 5 people): $15
    • Large car load (6 or more): $25
    • Children 3 and under: Free
These prices make Ridgeview a super affordable — and memorable — night out.
  5. That Retro Touch
Sound comes through your car radio on FM 93.9 — just tune in when you arrive.

If you’re looking for a magical evening in DeKalb County — where the charm of the good ole days meets modern comfort — make your way to Ridgeview Drive-In. It’s more than just a movie: it’s an experience, a memory, and a reminder that sometimes the best nights are the ones spent watching stories under the open sky.

A Fall Drive on Lookout Mountain Parkway

A Fall Drive on Lookout Mountain Parkway

Written By Emma Goggans

The Lookout Mountain Parkway is beautiful year-round, with each season painting the landscape in its own way—spring brings bursts of rhododendrons and mountain laurel, summer hums with campfires and laughter, and winter sprinkles a soft dusting of snow across the ridges. But it’s in the fall that Lookout Mountain truly shines its brightest.

Known as one of America’s Scenic Drives by Reader’s Digest, the Lookout Mountain Parkway winds 93 miles from Gadsden, Alabama, to Chattanooga, Tennessee. But here in DeKalb County, you’ll find some of its brightest gems—waterfalls, canyons, overlooks, and mountain towns that seem tailor-made for fall adventures. Whether you’re chasing colorful leaves, planning a hike, or looking for a festival to anchor your trip, this drive offers it all.

As you cruise the Parkway this fall, here are a few must-stop highlights to make your drive complete:

Sunset at Brow Park in Mentone, Alabama

Nature Stops Along the Parkway

Little River Canyon National Preserve
Kick off your road trip at one of Alabama’s best natural wonders. In fall, the Little River Canyon is ablaze with color, and the 45-foot  Little River Falls makes the perfect centerpiece. The 11-mile Rim Parkway Drive is a perfect alternate route from the Lookout Mountain Parkway—with eight overlooks to stop and savor, you’ll see the canyon from every breathtaking angle, cool rock formations, and Grace’s Highfalls (Alabama’s tallest waterfall at 133 feet, which flows seasonally depending on rainfall!).

DeSoto State Park & DeSoto Falls
Just a short drive up the Parkway, DeSoto State Park is a hiker’s paradise in autumn. Trails wind through forests bursting with golden leaves, while picnic spots and rustic cabins invite you to slow down and stay awhile. You also cannot miss one of Alabama’s most photographed spots: DeSoto Falls. The 104-foot cascade is surrounded by fall foliage, and the boat house located at the top of the falls creates a picturesque fall scene that looks like it was pulled straight from a painting.

Mentone, Alabama
Mentone is a charming mountain town that is a must on any Parkway drive. With its art galleries, antique shops, cozy cafés, and sweeping views from Brow Park, Mentone feels like the perfect fall postcard. It’s also home to one of the season’s most beloved festivals.

Fall Events to Plan Your Road Trip Around

Spookapalooza – October 25–26
Spend Halloween weekend on the mountain at DeSoto State Park’s beloved Spookapalooza celebration. Enjoy a full lineup of fall fun—from the annual pumpkin carving contest to a spirited campsite-decorating competition and candy-filled trick-or-treating through the campground. With costumed kids, glowing pumpkins, and campfires flickering through the trees, it’s a magical and memory-making way to celebrate spooky season in the great outdoors.

Fort Payne Holiday Open Houses – November 1-2
The Fort Payne Holiday Open House Weekend is a time when the local community comes together to celebrate the magic of Christmas. Get into the holiday spirit as local shops welcome visitors with festive displays, seasonal refreshments, and special sales. It’s the perfect way to support local merchants while checking off your holiday shopping list in a charming small-town setting.

Canyon Fest – November 1
Hosted at the Little River Canyon Center, Canyon Fest is a celebration that blends arts, music, food, and nature into one unforgettable day. From artist demonstrations to children’s activities, it’s a family-friendly event with a backdrop like no other.

Creative Spirit Market – November 8-9
Held in DeSoto State Park’s picnic area, Creative Spirit Market is an open-air art fair that features fine and folk art, handcrafted goods, live music, and artist demonstrations. With interactive art stations, unique gifts, and a cozy CCC pavilion fireplace, it’s a family-friendly fall tradition. Admission is free; $2 parking fee applies.

Collinsville Turkey Trot – November 8
Celebrate fall with a day of family fun at the Collinsville TurkeyTrot, featuring an antique car and tractor show, turkey shoot, pony rides, a petting zoo, and the beloved “turkey toss” tradition. It’s a lighthearted community event you won’t want to miss!

A Road Trip to Remember

Of course, no matter where you stop, the joy of the Lookout Mountain Parkway is the drive itself. Around every bend is another scene that begs you to pull over—rolling ridges, fiery treetops, quiet pastures, or rustic barns framed by autumn colors. Whether you take it all in one day or stretch your trip over a weekend, fall along Lookout Mountain is a journey you’ll want to make again and again. So roll down the windows, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and let the season’s beauty and community spirit guide your journey.

Be sure to check the Fall Foliage Report for the latest updates on peak color across Lookout Mountain and DeKalb County, so you can time your visit perfectly.

The 5+ Best Overlooks in DeKalb County

The 5+ Best Overlooks in DeKalb County

Written By Emma Goggans

There’s something about standing at the edge of an overlook that never gets old. Maybe it’s the thrill of seeing just how wide the world can be, or the quiet reminder of how small we really are in comparison to the mountains, rivers, and skies that surround us. Here in DeKalb County, we’re spoiled with some of the most breathtaking views in Alabama—places where you can watch the sun dip behind the mountains, hear the roar of a waterfall, or just sit in stillness while nature does all the talking.

If you’re looking for the perfect spot to soak it all in, here are five of the best overlooks in DeKalb County that you absolutely have to experience for yourself.

Brow Park – Mentone, AL

If Mentone had a crown jewel, Brow Park would be it. Tucked just off AL Highway 117, this spot offers one of the few public brow views on Lookout Mountain—and it’s a stunner. On a clear day, you can see for miles—rolling hills, patchwork farmland, and the stillness of the valley below. This quiet, scenic overlook is also a local favorite for catching golden-hour sunsets. Bring a picnic and relax under one of the covered pavilions, or simply stop by for a moment of peace with a view. Whether you’re a dedicated sunset chaser or just someone who loves a good lookout, Brow Park is a must-visit spot in the heart of Mentone.

📍 200-300 North Cool Street, Mentone, Alabama 35984

Jim Lynn Overlook – Buck’s Pocket State Park

Tucked inside Buck’s Pocket State Park in the heart of Sand Mountain, the Jim Lynn Overlook feels like one of those “best-kept secrets.” The overlook is found along the Point Rock Trail and is without a doubt one of the most jaw-dropping spots in North Alabama. Buck’s Pocket State Park is a spectacular natural canyon pocket of the Appalachian Mountain foothills, and this spot offers sweeping views of the rugged landscape. It’s quiet, it’s wild, and it’s stunning. If you want a view that feels untouched and serene, the Jim Lynn Overlook is the spot for you.

📍 Co Rd 556, Lakeview, AL 35971

DeSoto Falls Overlook – DeSoto State Park

DeSoto Falls is one of Alabama’s most iconic waterfalls, and the overlook is hands-down one of the best ways to see it. Towering 104 feet, the falls thunder into the pool below, and from the stone overlook you get a postcard-perfect view. It’s an easy stop with a big payoff—you don’t even have to hike far to be wowed. In spring, the water rushes strong. In fall, it’s framed with brilliant color. And in summer, it’s the perfect cool escape. From its stone perch above the gorge, the overlook makes you feel like you’re standing inside a living postcard, where nature’s power and beauty meet in one breathtaking view.

📍 7104 DeSoto Pkwy NE, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Little River Falls Overlook
– Little River Canyon National Preserve

This one is an absolute must-see. Serving as the starting point of the 11-mile Little River Canyon Rim Parkway, Little River Falls Overlook gives you a front-row seat to one of the most photographed waterfalls in Alabama. From the boardwalk trail, you can watch the 45-foot cascade tumble gracefully into the canyon below, sending up mist that catches the sunlight like a million tiny diamonds. Whether the canyon walls are painted in autumn color or the falls are dusted with winter snow, Little River Falls is a year-round favorite for both locals and visitors.

📍 Little River Falls Overlook, Hwy 176, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Canyon View Overlook
– Little River Canyon National Preserve

With a name like Canyon View, you already know you’re in for something amazing. This overlook is one of the most popular stops along the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway, and delivers a jaw-dropping panorama of the Little River carving its way through the canyon. The vantage point is wide and spacious, making it perfect for snapping photos or just leaning against the railing to soak it all in. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a hawk soaring above the canyon rim. It’s one of those stops that makes you appreciate just how special Little River Canyon really is.

📍 Canyon View Overlook, Hwy 176, Fort Payne, AL 35967

There are many other scenic overlooks along the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway, each offering its own unique perspective of the canyon. We encourage visitors to take the time to experience them all. From intimate nooks to expansive vistas, every stop is a chance to connect with the rugged beauty of northeast Alabama and make memories that last long after the drive is over. These overlooks are definitely standouts, but they are just a small piece of the panoramic puzzle—don’t miss a single overlook along this unforgettable route.

Take It All In

From the mist of waterfalls to the endless expanse of the canyon, DeKalb County’s overlooks aren’t just places to take pictures—they’re places to pause, breathe, and feel connected to the land around you. Whether you’re chasing adventure, planning a picnic, or simply looking for a moment of peace, these five overlooks are ready to deliver a view you’ll never forget.

So next time you’re driving through our corner of the mountains, don’t just pass by—pull over, step out, and look around. Trust me, the view is totally worth it.

DeKalb County’s Most Roadside-worthy Whimsical Stops

DeKalb County’s Most Roadside-worthy Whimsical Stops

Written By Emma Goggans

There’s nothing quite like a good road trip—windows down, snacks in the console, and a playlist full of classics guiding you down winding roads. If you’re enjoying a road trip to DeKalb County you will be sure to find winding mountain drives, friendly small towns, and the occasional roadside oddity that makes you do a double take. While most people head for the breathtaking views at Little River Canyon National Preserve or the hiking trails at DeSoto State Park, there’s a whole other side to this area waiting to be discovered. Keep your eyes peeled for bronze statues of country music legends, a life-sized dinosaur made of junk, and even a car that looks like it drove straight into a wall. If you’re the kind of traveler who loves to pull over for the weird, the whimsical, and the wonderfully unexpected, then buckle up—this blog is your guide to DeKalb County’s most roadside-worthy stops according to Roadsideamerica.com!

Bronze Statues of the Alabama Band

If you’ve spent any time in Fort Payne, you know this town is proud of its musical roots. Right in the middle of downtown, you’ll find four larger-than-life bronze statues of the hometown heroes who made up the iconic country band Alabama. With over 75 million records sold and hits like Mountain Music and Dixieland Delight, Alabama’s influence is undeniable. But beyond the music, these statues celebrate the band’s deep connection to their hometown and their contributions to the local community. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just passing through, it’s worth a stop to snap a photo and soak in a little music history.

Gault Ave. & 4th St. North Fort Payne, AL 35967

Dye Ditch Gang

Just a few blocks away from the Alabama Band Statues, there may be something unexpected that catches your eye—a group of playful, larger-than-life sculptures standing proudly along an old drainage ditch. Meet the Dye Ditch Gang, a quirky and heartfelt art installation that pays tribute to the town’s millworking roots.

Back in the day, a drainage channel carried colorful runoff from the hosiery mills that once made Fort Payne the “Sock Capital of the World.” The dyes would streak the water in vibrant hues, earning the ditch its now-famous name. Artist Bobby Welch brought that legacy to life with these whimsical sculptures, capturing the spirit and pride of the hardworking folks who shaped this town’s industrial past. It’s a spot where art meets history—and you might just find yourself grinning at the charm of it all.

151 5th St NE, Fort Payne, AL 35967

The “Jesus Car” Crashed Into a Wall

You know you’re in for an interesting drive when you spot the front half of a car sticking straight out of a brick wall with the word “JESUS” boldly displayed above it. No, it’s not the aftermath of a wreck—it’s art… or a message… or maybe both? This unexpected roadside sight sits just off the main road in  Fort Payne at DeKalb Parts Co. and has been confusing and delighting passersby for years.

Whether it’s a statement piece or just a case of eccentric creativity, no one really seems to know the full story—and that’s half the fun. It’s the kind of stop that makes you laugh, scratch your head, and immediately reach for your phone to take a picture. Whatever it is, it’s pure roadside gold.

1012 Gault Ave S, Fort Payne, AL

Junk Creatures of Mike Goggans

If you’ve ever driven along the Lookout Mountain Parkway and spotted a towering metal dinosaur peeking out from a lot full of strange creatures, you’ve stumbled across the wild world of Fort Payne’s own junk artist: Mike Goggans (or Ekim Snaggog, if you’re reading it backwards). That towering metal dinosaur is known as Junkosaurus Wrecks—a 21-foot tall dinosaur made from over 2,000 pieces of junk. It’s as jaw-dropping as it is imaginative. But that’s just the tip of the (junk) iceberg. Scattered throughout the lot next to Barnyard Antiques are more than 30 of Mike’s creations—each one quirky, clever, and completely unforgettable. Keep an eye out for a ten-foot robot named Lirpa Anad Nitsud (named after Mike’s kids—spelled backward, of course), or a giant snake called the Rattle Headed Copper Moccasin. Mike’s work is quirky, impressive, and totally worth the stop.

4616 DeSoto Parkway, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Church With a Rock In It

As you wind your way through Lookout Mountain, keep your eyes peeled for a small stone chapel tucked into the trees—and built quite literally around a giant boulder. This is the Sallie Howard Memorial Chapel, lovingly constructed in 1937 by Colonel Milford W. Howard in memory of his late wife, Sallie. It’s not just a roadside curiosity—it’s a testament to lasting love, carved in stone.

Colonel Howard had always dreamed of recreating a chapel he and Sallie had once visited during a trip to Europe. One of his final accomplishments before his death was making that dream a reality. The result is a charming, one-of-a-kind church that incorporates a massive rock right into its walls. But what really makes the chapel special are the personal touches—above the pulpit, a beam is inscribed with Sallie’s words: “God Has All Ways Been As Good To Me As I Would Let Him Be.”

The church is always left open to worshipers and visitors and still holds weekly Sunday services. Peaceful, humble, and completely unforgettable, the Sallie Howard Chapel is the kind of roadside stop that lingers with you long after you’ve left.

14 County Road 617, Mentone, AL 35984

The Barter Man

Not every roadside statue has a backstory, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting!  Just outside of Rainsville, standing tall at the entrance to the Barter Post, is a giant old prospector statue, now repurposed as a friendly roadside mascot. With one arm raised in a wave, he greets every traveler who passes by like an old friend.

132 Old Hwy 35 E, Rainsville, AL

DeKalb County Mural Trail

If art is your kind of roadside stop, you’ll love the 19 murals painted across DeKalb County. Each one tells a story of local history, culture, or community pride. They make the perfect pit stops for stretching your legs and snapping a few photos. Want to see them all? Follow the DeKalb Mural Trail and turn your road trip into an art walk.

Sometimes the best parts of a trip aren’t the destinations—they’re the unexpected stops along the way. DeKalb County is full of places that make you pause, smile, and maybe scratch your head a little. So next time you’re driving through, take the long way. Roll down your windows, pull over when something looks odd, and enjoy the weird, wonderful character of our little corner of Alabama.

Our Best “Worlds Longest Yard Sale” Shopping Tips

Our Best “World’s Longest Yard Sale” Shopping Tips
August 7-10, 2025

There is a unique phenomenon that happens every year on Lookout Mountain Parkway the first Thursday through Sunday each August. It is an event so unique it claims a world title! The Highway 127 Yard Sale, or more commonly known as the “World’s Longest Yardsale” is literally the world’s longest yard sale spanning nearly 700 miles across 6 states (Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, & Alabama)

The idea for this event was more than just creating the world’s longest yard sale. In 1987 Mike Walker, a former Fentress County Executive in Tennessee, wanted to create an event that encouraged  travelers to bypass interstate highways and choose scenic routes that would take them through rural communities and allow them to experience what small towns and cities had to offer. To this day, the attraction invites thousands of people each year to take the scenic route, shop for hidden treasures, and explore what our beautiful country has to offer; from state parks to historical landmarks to waterfalls and so much more!

This year the event will be held August 7-10, 2025. The event runs from Gadsden, Alabama along the Lookout Mountain Parkway to Chattanooga, Tennessee where it picks up on Highway 127 and continues over 600 miles to Addison, Michigan.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” could be considered the theme of this event. Seeing people from across the country & the world haggling and bartering over things that may have been stored in a garage for years is a unique sight indeed.

The pleasure we derive from rummaging through someone’s junk, hoping to find something unique and maybe even discovering an item worth a lot to you but the seller says, “I’ll take .50 cents for that.” It causes a serotonin boost!

If traveling this famous route is on your bucket list, we’d like to help make sure you make the most of this once in a lifetime experience. The yard sale brings about various questions from people that are new to the event.

We hope these tips will help give you a better understanding of how to make the most of your journey.

Who organizes the event?

The event was created by tourism officials in Tennessee, but rely on community support from each town and/or county tourism and chamber office to promote the event in their regions. The success of the sales depend on coordination from each community.

How do I become a vendor?

Anyone can be a vendor by simply having a yard sale in their yard, at their business or setting up in designated vendor places. Many communities have different places were vendors from within and outside of that town or city can set up a booth. The main thing is to be sure you have permission from the land owner to set up a booth. Usually the more the merrier therefore clusters of vendors are commonly found along the route.

What can I sell?

Almost anything! Popular is junk, antiques, collectibles, dishes and glassware, to farm implements, food items, produce and more. Some things to consider however are business licenses and health department permits. Each town has different rules and regulations so be sure to check with the local City Hall and Health Department where you set up your booth for any licenses or permits you may need to purchase.

Where does it start?

The current length of the World’s Longest Yard Sale takes you from Gadsden, AL to Addison, MI. You might decide to start at the southern end and travel north or right the opposite. You may decide to jump on board anywhere in between. Parking may be limited in some areas to virtually impossible in other places to ample. It depends on the area. The yard sale routes become narrow country roads in many places but don’t let that discourage you. VERY IMPORTANT – be cautious of the driver in front of you and pedestrians on the roadway – be patient and a parking space will present itself.

Where are the Yard Sales?

Yard sales can be found along the route at homes located on the designated route, in business parking lots, alongside streets adjacent to the route, in wide open fields and pastures (remember, these roads pass through beautiful rural areas with farms and some of the most awesome scenery you will find anywhere), and basically anywhere people can find to set up. Some areas will have large numbers of vendors in one group, others may be scattered and in some instances you may travel for several miles or more without seeing a yard sale because of the distances between homes on the country roads.

Is there an entry fee?

You should never have to pay admission. The event was not set up for that purpose. It is free to participate however some vendor spaces may charge a nominal rental fee to allow you to set up a booth.

What's the best time to shop?

Each vendor is on their own and can choose when they want to begin but typically vendors are active by 8:00 A.M. and operate until late in the evening.

Can I ship items home?

Definitely! You found something you just had to have but don’t have room to load in your vehicle? Many communities have shipping centers and of course Post Offices. They will be glad to work with you to get your items home so you can continue on the yard sale route.

How long does each stop take?

That depends on how disciplined you are and how much ground you want to travel in one day. If you have to stop at every yard sale then it may take you awhile. It is easy enough to “cruise” the yard sales and travel a modest distance but it also easy to get caught up in the event and spend 3 to 4 hours in one area. Pre-Plan. Decide in advance how much time you want to spend in each area and try to stick with your plan. But most of all – have a good time and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Where can I stay?

There are plenty of accommodations located along the way. Making reservations is a wise decision but you have to have a plan and be disciplined to make your destination for the night. Getting a room may be difficult if you wait too late in the day to find a place but not impossible, so we suggest planning ahead if possible.

Helpful Suggestions include:

  • Drive a large car. You never know what oversize treasures you might unexpectedly find.
  • Bring items such as sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and mosquito repellant, to protect yourself from the elements. It’s hot and humid in this part of the country and the sun can roast you even on a cloudy day.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and drink plenty of fluids, chances are you’ll be doing a lot of walking. It is usually very warm and all the walking and activities can drain you before you know it. Don’t succumb to a heat stroke or dehydration.
  • Many vendors don’t take credit cards or checks, so bring cash.
  • Get out there early! Though there are hundreds of vendors who sell all day long from sunup to sundown, you’ll be competing with thousands of other shoppers. And as with any yard sale, the good stuff goes quickly.
  • Be very cautious of other vehicles. You will often find yourself looking off on the sides of the road at the yard sales and before you know it the vehicle in front of you has come to a stop. Be alert.
  • Watch for pedestrians.
  • Take pictures and share your journey by tagging @DeKalbTourism
  • Enjoy YOUR America!

Chill Out in DeKalb: Top Spots to Beat the Summer Heat

Chill Out in DeKalb: Top Spots to Beat the Summer Heat

Written By Rebecca Henderson

Let’s face it, June in Alabama means summer has officially arrived. The sun’s toasty, the days are long, and all you want is a refreshing escape. Luckily, DeKalb County isn’t just a scenic gem in Northeast Alabama — it’s packed with natural swimming holes, waterfalls, shady trails, and small-town spots where you can chill (literally and figuratively).

Whether you’re a local looking for a new weekend hangout or a road-tripper in search of a Southern summer oasis, here are some top spots to help you keep your cool.

Take a Dip at Little River Canyon National Preserve

If you’re not starting your summer adventures at Little River Canyon, you’re missing out. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” it’s home to one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi — and some seriously fun swimming holes. Check out Little Falls (also known as the “Hippie Hole”), located at the end of the Little Falls Trail. It’s a short hike and leads to a natural pool that’s perfect for a splash. The water’s cool year-round, and the cliffs make for great photos.

Little Falls and the Hippie Hole

DeSoto State Park Has Natural AC

DeSoto State Park is one of the best places to beat the heat, with waterfalls, misty woods, and shaded picnic spots. DeSoto Falls, one of the tallest and most picturesque in the state, offers scenic views and cool breezes. You can feel the temps drop while swimming in the mountaintop waters at the base of the falls, and there are plenty of nearby wading areas and creek spots that are great for dipping your toes. And the park’s boardwalk and river trails stay shaded even in peak sun.

Indulge in Cool Treats

After a day outdoors, nothing beats a sweet reward. Our county has a growing list of cozy spots for summertime treats.

  • Alice Circle – In the mood for a superfood? Try the refreshing new acai bowls, with a cool frozen base and lots of choices of nuts, grain and berries on top. (114 1st St. West, Fort Payne)
  • The Spot Coffee Shop – Try their iced lattes or blended smoothies. (101 Gault Ave. North, Fort Payne)
  • Lookout Mountain Creamery and Desserts – 20 flavors of homemade ice cream await. (2612 D Gault Ave. North, Fort Payne)
  • The Bakehouse Downtown – Stop in for an iced latte or yogurt parfait. (110 1st St. West, Fort Payne)
  • Caramelo Homemade Ice Cream – Try the authentic Mexican antojos, a variety of ice creams, or a handcrafted popsicle. (488 Main St. East, Rainsville)
DeSoto Falls located in DeSoto State Park on Lookout Mountain in Alabama.

Give the Kids a Fun Splash

For a carefree way to cool off with kids in tow, head to the Fort Payne Splash Pad at Fort Payne City Park. This vibrant, family-friendly destination is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. The splash pad features colorful water jets, sprayers, and fountains designed for safe and interactive play. It’s open seasonally and free to the public. With shaded picnic areas and restrooms nearby, parents can relax while little ones dash through the water. Open May-September, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Another option is to head to Geraldine Town Park and let the little ones try the fun features of the Geraldine Splash Pad. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Check out their Facebook page for updates.

Escape to the Forests of Buck’s Pocket State Park

Sometimes, the best way to beat the heat is to head for the trees. Buck’s Pocket State Park is a bit off the beaten path but worth the drive for its cool, shaded trails and peaceful campsites. Plus, with the recent addition of RV-friendly spots and improved facilities, it’s a great overnight option if you’re craving a little solitude. The high bluffs and deep valley make it naturally cooler, and the overlooks offer breezy views of the Appalachian foothills.

Summer in DeKalb County doesn’t have to mean hiding indoors with the AC on full blast. From natural swimming holes and scenic rivers to icy treats and forest hideaways, there’s no shortage of ways to stay cool and soak up the beauty of our area.

So, grab your towel, pack your snacks, and get ready to chill out.
